DOCUMENTO DEL MES: GALERNA DEL SÁBADO DE GLORIA
La historia más trágica de Santander está jalonada de acontecimientos que perduran en la memoria de sus gentes, como el incendio de la ciudad en 1941, la explosión del Machichaco y sin duda por el impacto de las numerosas muertes de pescadores la mañana del 20 de abril de 1878, festividad de Sábado Santo. Aquella fue una tragedia que sin embargo no solo afectó a la capital cántabra. pescadores de Laredo, Colindres, Castro, hasta un total de 106 perdieron la vida aquel aciago día.

El temporal duró tres cuartos de hora tiempo en el cual naufragaron tres lanchas de pesca de altura y otras tres barquías. Rafael González Echegaray nos narra en un artículo sobre la tragedia en el puerto de Santander, como se desarrollan los acontecimientos. Una de las lanchas “había quedado en seco sobre una lastra frente a San Pedro del Mar. Era la lancha de Resines, que había quedado empotrada en una roca en la costa y que iba siendo deshecha por el oleaje que iba arrancando uno a uno a sus hombres. Un montón de gentes contemplaba desde tierra el desenlace. [...]. El párroco desde tierra dio la absolución y allí fueron desapareciendo todos a la vista de todos.

La mayor parte de ellos estaban casados y con hijos y dejaban a un total de 75 personas entre viudas e hijos sin otro sustento económico. En algunos casos la perdida podía ser doble al morir padre e hijo.

La tragedia sin embargo supera nuestras fronteras y se recibe dinero del extranjero, como ya hemos mencionado: París, Buenos Aires, Matanzas o Manila se solidarizan también con el dolor de estas familias.
La desgracia dejó sin duda una honda huella en las gentes de Cantabria, la literatura y el arte de la época dejaron numerosos testimonios de aquel horror.
